Content and Structure of Courses

Please note: in any given course, content and structure may vary to some degree from the general descriptions given here.

BASIC TRAINING (LEVEL 1)

The course will either extend over 5 days (usually from 6 pm on Wednesday to 1.30 pm on Sunday - around 30 hours of training) or over two weekends (usually from Friday 5 pm to Sunday 2 pm).

Using a mix of experiential learning and guidance, this training will introduce participants to the theory and practice of Playback Theatre (PT). In general, the topics covered are:

  • Theory, history and social context

  • Values and ethics

  • PT as art, social interaction and ritual

  • The international Playback Theatre (PT) community

  • Introduction to key concepts such as stillness, presence, creativity, the use of metaphor, and the capacity for recognising and relating to the other (tele)

  • Basic listening skills

  • Story interpretation

  • Working as a team

  • Improvisational skills

  • Theory and practice of the roles of conductor, actor and musician

  • Technical exercises (to assist the learning of PT performance forms)

  • The basic short, intermediary and long forms used in PT performance

The course also normally includes a performance carried out by the participants to an invited audience.

SPECIAL TOPICS (LEVEL 2)

Overall, these courses aim to deepen your understanding of Playback Theatre and the context in which it operates, as well as to further develop your skills and abilities as a Playback performer and company member. Prerequisite

Completion of Core Training (Level 1) or 6 months experience in a Playback Theatre Company.
